Your job ad is a sales pitch. Write job descriptions that attract qualified candidates and filter out poor matches.

A job description is often the first conversation you have with a future employee. Yet many ads are long lists of requirements copied from older postings, and strong candidates skim them and move on. To write ads that people actually read and act on, focus on three things:

Write for the Candidate

1. Use a Clear, Searchable Job Title

Choose the title candidates actually search for and avoid internal jargon, so your role appears in results and is understood at a glance.

2. Lead with the Impact of the Role

Explain what the person will achieve in their first year and why it matters, before listing daily tasks or required skills.

3. Separate Must-Haves from Nice-to-Haves

Keep essential requirements short and realistic, because long wish lists discourage capable people, especially those who apply only when they meet every point.

Why Salary Ranges Build Trust

Candidates want to know whether a role fits their expectations before investing time in an application. Publishing a fair salary range attracts more serious applicants, shortens negotiations and shows that your company values openness from the first step.

Use Inclusive, Plain Language

Short sentences and everyday words make your ad easier to read on a phone and easier to understand for non-native speakers. Avoid gendered terms, unnecessary acronyms and buzzwords like “rockstar” or “ninja” that quietly discourage many qualified people from applying.

Before publishing, ask a team member in a similar role to read the ad. If they recognize their real job in it, candidates will too, and the people who apply will arrive with accurate expectations.

What Better Job Descriptions Deliver

  • More Qualified Applicants – Clear requirements attract people who match the role and discourage applications that waste everyone's time.
  • Faster Screening – Recruiters review fewer unsuitable profiles, so shortlists are ready sooner and interviews can start earlier.
  • Stronger First Impressions – A clear, honest ad shows candidates that your company is organized, respectful and worth joining.
